Activated carbon is an elemental form of carbon with a very high porosity. Due to the existence of an extensive network of pores, such coal has a very large specific surface (even over 3000 m2 / g). This activation of the carbon is accomplished by exposing the carbon to high temperature with limited air access.


Thanks to such an extensive surface, active carbon has excellent adsorption properties (adsorbent) and is able to bind on the surface and neutralize many substances. In addition, as an adsorbent, it is also used in cosmetics (skin cleansing masks), in hygiene products (whitening toothpastes) or in many other areas, as a filtering agent (e.g. in aquariums).
The origin of activated carbon


Many products on the market are based on low-quality, technical activated carbon obtained from charcoal or fossil coal, which are not intended for consumption purposes, but for industrial or technical applications. Due to the low purity class of the coal used, they may contain substances harmful to health. The safest source of pure activated carbon for consumption is coconut shells.
